TRANSITIONAL HOUSING

The YWCA of Western New York has been assisting women and children with housing since early 20th century.  Today the YWCA of WNY has 22 apartments which house homeless single women with minor aged children.  Families may stay in the program anywhere from 6 to 24 months.

Families, headed by single females account for nearly a third of homeless in Erie County, and the majority of those women have been made homeless due to domestic violence, most others are homeless due to family dysfunction and insufficient income.  Transitional housing provides women with an opportunity to build healthy support systems, enjoy safe, affordable housing, and address other key areas.   We encourage the women in our program to expand their options and realize their potential.

POTENTIAL REALIZED!
The Program:
The staff:client ratio is approximately 11:1.  Upon entering the program, clients will meet with their case manager to develop and Independent Living Plan (IDP).  The IDP's help guide not only the client, but the entire program.  It is our goal to constantly monitor our program to be sure it best serves our clients' needs.  We encourage goal development in the areas of education, employment/career development, parenting, money management, etc.

The YWCA of WNY Transitional Housing program offers a number of workshops to assist all clients achieve their goals.  Some of the workshops include:  education/financial aid, homeownership, utility consumption, permanent housing, economic self-sufficiency, tenant rights and health fairs.

In addition to the workshops, our residents meet regularly at Tenant meetings to discuss program development (what would they like to see in the program), and any other tenant issues they would like to discuss.    Group discussions are also held on a monthly basis with topics ranging from parenting to jewelry making (focus on women helping women).
